Show the shadow, then throw the shuriken: side-angle W, make them answer it, get the shadow E slow, and only then fire Q so you create the double-hit and energy-refund window instead of donating the dodge up front.
If lanes do not give real setup, jungle Zed is usually better off full clearing and punishing the enemy jungler’s reveal with mirrored camps than forcing a level-3 story, because his games get much cleaner once that first damage reset lands on time.
In fights, make them answer the return spot: soften with W-E-Q first, then use R once peel is committed so the landing spot and the snapback are both threats, even if the kill is on the exposed mid, jungler, or support instead of the screened ADC.
Ult once the fight has already asked someone to answer your shadow. If you can open with W-E-Q from fog and draw dash, exhaust, charm, or a peel cooldown, your R gets much cleaner because the landing spot and the return spot both stay threatening instead of getting covered by fresh CC. If the ADC is still fully screened, do not wait forever for the perfect portrait; take the exposed mid, jungler, or support whose death breaks the shape of the fight. The bad ult is the one you press just to arrive. The good ult is the one that punishes the answer they already showed.
